When the lure of plastic surgery and vanity is too much, there are people who resort to stealing …
A woman who stole nearly £10,000 from the top Cumbrian hotel where she worked as a receptionist spent the money on cosmetic surgery and treats for her boyfriend.
Vicky Stacy Wood, from Whitehaven, took the money between April 2009 and April 2010, while was employed at the Armathwaite Hall Country House Hotel, near Bassenthwaite.
She did it by taking cash off customers’ gift cards and was caught only when they found they had no credit left on them when they came to use them to pay for their meals.
The 24-year-old was given a nine-month prison sentence, suspended for two years when she appeared at Carlisle Crown Court yesterday.
She was also told to do 200 hours unpaid community work when she pleaded guilty to the theft at court.
The judge, Recorder Arthur Noble, told her she had betrayed the trust that both her employers and her customers had in her.
Prosecutor Alan Lovett told the court that Wood, of Lonsdale Court, had initially merely been given a police caution after admitting only that she had taken about £700.
When further inquiries showed she had stolen much more than that she was questioned again, and charged with the greater theft.
He said she eventually confessed to taking the larger amount, although she said she could not remember the specific details of each time she had done it.
In mitigation defence barrister Greg Hoare said that at the time of the thefts Wood had been “below par in a general sense of health and mental well-being”.
He told the court: “As a general rule she tries to lead an industrious life.”
